15 Arrested at Remembrance Blockade
Press Release 13th November
15 people, 11 quakers and 4 welsh teenagers, got arrested at the Faslane Naval base this afternoon after blockading the base in remembrance of all the victims of war and conflict.
The quakers were dressed up as White Poppies and four of them were locked on to a big white poppy. The White Poppies symbolises the belief that there are better ways than war to resolve conflicts.
This morning, four more people from Wales got arrested for blockading Faslane, and yesterday another six quakers were arrested.
The blockades were part of the ongoing campaign Faslane 365. The campaign aims at blockading the Faslane base every day for a whole year in order get the government to make a timetable for dismantling the nuclear weapons. These 15 arrests makes the total number of arrests since the 1st October to 254.
Statement from the Quaker group:
“This day and everyday we remember all the victims of war and conflict, including 660,000 civilians killed in Iraq, and we will continue to do so until disarmament is achieved and war is abolished.
Our Quaker Peace Testimony is more than a declaration, it is an active expression of our understanding of the nature of how we should live in this world, arising from our Quaker meeting which we regularly hold at the gates of Faslane in witness to our grief at the wickedness of the weapons behind the fence.
We are happy to be part of Faslane 365 and join in with other groups in opposing the replacement or retention of Trident.”
