Press Release of 7th July 2007

SEDGEMOOR GROUP ARRESTED AT NUCLEAR DEMO

Three men and a woman from the Cheddar area spent Friday 6th July in a blockade of the Faslane nuclear base in Scotland.

Those arrested were David Parkin from Axbridge, Dr Richard Lawson from Churchill and Wendy Cox and Jeff Brewster who live in Shipham. They were held after lying in the road stopping workers arriving for the early shift at the base. Three of the four had not been arrested before but have become so concerned about nuclear proliferation that they decided to take action. their action Jeff Brewster said 'We are prepared to break the law to highlight our Government's far more serious breaches of its nuclear treaty obligations'. They were held at Clydebank Police Station for 10 hours before being released. Dr. Richard Lawson explained, 'It is the duty of the citizen to disobey the Government if it behaves foolishly and illegally.'

The four joined representatives from Peace Groups across Somerset who maintained a presence all day outside the main gate of the base. They were campaigning under the slogan Tractors Not Trident, to show the enormous waste of money renewing our nuclear weapons would be and to highlight how the money could be better spent.
