Scottish Students

The Scottish Student bloc of Faslane 365 wasn’t exactly the most organised group. Due to exams and the distance between people, we didn’t really have a great plan, or even know each other, until a few days before the action. Somehow we managed to get a venue for the day before the blockade to do training and planning. On the Monday we got together, with some sort of plan already semi-constructed. Then students showed up, which was quite a low number, but not bad considering it’s the week before Christmas. Few were willing to be arrested but as the training went on people changed their mind and the number of people willing to risk arrest went up to eight. The two who were left for support wanted to also risk arrest but couldn’t for separate reasons. After training (and a quick trip to the chippie) we got the train to Helensburgh and then a bus to Faslane Peace Camp. On the way we got chatting to an electrician who works on the conventional weapons on one of the Trident submarines. He was on his way to Faslane too. He agreed with us on many issues, and said that no-one on the submarines wanted the weapons that they are deployed with. He said it was simply a job, and that he didn’t want to think about what would happen if the order to fire ever came. He also said the blockades had an effect on workers, and that work in the base was disrupted by Faslane 365.
