Jimmy Reid to join Valentine's Day blockade of Faslane
Press Release: 8th February 2007
Author and broadcaster Jimmy Reid is set to join a group of fellow pensioners at a blockade of Faslane naval base on the 14th February in a protest against government plans to replace the Trident nuclear missile system.
Jimmy, who is best known as an organiser of the 1971 work-in at Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, will be joined at the Valentine's Day protest by his wife, Joan.
The Pensioners for Peace blockade is the inspiration of Harry McEachan, a Glaswegian now living in Largs. Harry, who describes himself as OBE ('Over Bloody Eighty'), said: "If the Trident renewal programme continues for 40 years, it will be paid for by my children and grandchildren. Continued expense on Trident is the height of financial stupidity. Education, hospitals, health care, pensions, even soldiers with proper equipment are all a better use of the nation's resources. Trident deters no-one. Pensioners are the best group of people to make the necessary protest against Trident."
The Pensioners for Peace day at Faslane is part of the Faslane 365 year-long continuous blockade of the WMD base. The campaign, which has resulted in almost 500 arrests, began in October last year, and has involved people from all over the UK and beyond as well as many specialist groups, such as doctors, authors, academics, ministers of religion and elected representatives.
