Wales plan to blockade Trident base

7/11/2006

CND campaigners from all over Wales will be joining a continuous blockade of Faslane Naval Base on November 12. The blockade, known as Faslane 365, is aiming to cause a whole year of disruption at the Trident British nuclear weapons base on the Clyde in Scotland.

Many Welsh people have already joined the blockade and
some have been arrested by the police. Next week, about 100 people are planning to take part in a 72 hour all-Welsh blockade.

They will be blockading the nuclear base in South/Mid and North Wales in shifts over three days, 13th - 15th November.

CND Cymru say they are aware that taking part in Faslane 365 may well lead to a charge of breach of the peace but have been preparing themselves in Cardiff, Bangor and Colwyn Bay with training workshops on non-violence and how to cope with being arrested and detained by the police.

For Martin Fitton from Cardiff, this is the first time he has taken a
stand on the nuclear weapons issue, he said:

"I felt it was time I spoke out against Trident. The fact that nuclear
weapons are being prepared and deployed for use, and in my name, is sickening. Trident devalues humanity and the natural world - and all that I care about and work for.

'We hear our politicians talk about lack of availability of funding for health, social services and education, yet the same politicians are currently considering a replacement for the obscene British nuclear weapons system at a cost of at least £76 billion."

"Climate change is a serious threat to the planet and international stability, yet resources are squandered and pollution only increased by nuclear war preparations. Nuclear weapons do not make us safer they make us more vulnerable."

Many participants in the Welsh Blockade have taken time off work or school to commit themselves to this Faslane 365 'slot' on working days. They will
be travelling to Scotland on Sunday (12th November) from many areas of Wales including Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Aberystwyth, Wrexham and Bangor.

A group from Plaid Cymru will include Party President
Dafydd Iwan, Vice President and MEP Jill Evans and AM Leanne Wood. So far over ninety groups from around Britain and from further a-field have taken, or are planning to take part in the year-long blockade.
