Trident Renewal - A Disastrous Decision

In voting to renew the Trident nuclear missile fleet Britain has abandoned the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, contributed greatly to the restarted nuclear arms race, ensured that Iran is also likely to build nuclear weapons together with many other non-nuclear countries, and condemned the world to at least another fifty years with the threat of global nuclear war hanging over us all.

All this in honour of the misnamed nuclear 'Deterrence', shown not to work during the 1962 Cuban Missile crisis. Robert McNamara, then American Secretary of Defence, said, ‘We came within a hairbreadth of nuclear war’. ‘‘The indefinite combination of human fallibility (which we can never get rid of) and nuclear weapons carries the very high probability of the destruction of nations'. We are playing Russian roulette with the future of the human race

It is generally acknowledged that nuclear submarines are not a deterrent to the spread of terrorism and it is even admitted that there is no obvious present threat to our national security. Our government says “the future is uncertain, therefore we need nuclear weapons” This, of course, is an argument for everyone, to have nuclear weapons. Yet the real threat to Britain and the world is Global Warming.
