Dundee People & Planet blockaded and arrested (26/09/07)

Five students from Dundee People & Planet were arrested on Wednesday 26th September on a chilly but sunny morning. Making their way by public transport, they arrived at the base at 10am carrying banners stating ‘Renew Trident cos peace ain’t worth the risk’ and ‘We don’t want a nuclear world.’ The blockade began immediately with two of the group locking on with a cardboard tube and another two using a bicycle lock to stay attached to each other.

The group were there for approximately half an hour before the road was cleared. Three of the group were not given any warning by the police to get out of the road and were placed under arrest. The two with the bicycle chain remained until they were cut loose. All five were charged with breach of the peace and one had the added charge of resisting arrest. The group were held for about 7 hours altogether.

For most of the group, this had been the first experience of blockading and getting arrested. One said “I came because I support the 365 blockade and what it represents.
The three main British political parties pretty much agree about these weapons of death. As our opposition is being ignored then non-violent direct action is the most effective way of showing our dissent. We have a responsibility under international law to carry out these actions. We need to get rid of these weapons, not only for moral but also for environmental and economic reasons.” The group wanted to come to Faslane before the blockade draws to a close on October 1st.
