Peace Movement Protest at Trident Base on Day of Trident Debate/Vote

Wednesday 14 March 8a.m. to noon at North Gate of Faslane Naval Base.

Individuals and groups from across Scotland will denounce Trident and call for disarmament of Britain’s weapons of mass destruction in a demonstration at Faslane Naval Base at 8a.m. Wednesday 14th March.

The message of the protest is: Trident is Immoral and Illegal - Whatever the Outcome of the Vote.

Connecting with demonstrations at Westminster and across Scotland throughout the day, Faslane 365, Trident Ploughshares, Faslane Peace Camp and Scottish CND will protest against the present Trident system and any upgrade as the government prepares to decide whether to commit the UK to build a new generation of nuclear weapons.

Faslane365 organizer Angie Zelter said “Protests at Faslane against the UK's weapons of mass destruction will continue whatever the outcome of the vote because Trident must be dismantled in accordance with international law. Any replacement of nuclear weapons by the UK would be unlawful under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The debate should not be about whether or when to replace Trident but about setting a timetable for beginning the process of disarming Britain’s WMD. Only then would the government have met its obligations under the NPT and the requirement under International Law as set out by the International Court of Justice to actually disarm its
nuclear weapons.”

Since 1 October there has been relentless opposition to Britain’s continuing possession of Trident missiles and submarines at Faslane. Groups from throughout Britain and beyond have joined in the ongoing blockades, with nearly 600 people arrested thus far. People have also come to protest at Faslane from Belgium, Scandinavia, the US, and Japan. Groups representing diverse sectors of society, including Elected Representatives, Lawyers, Health Professionals, Clergy, and many others have demonstrated at the base since the start of the Faslane365 year-long blockade.
